Bob Miller, Woodcarving
& Marlene Miller, Painting
Both Marlene and Bob love the coastal marshes and seek inspiration there for their artwork. Marlene captures the light contrasts and colors of the everchanging landscape through her paintings using acrylics as her medium. Bob sculpts the willowy forms of coastal shorebirds using native woods and materials.
A retired forestry professor, Bob has a lifelong relationship with trees and enjoys working with woods of varying hardness, texture and coloration. He often uses driftwood for a natural base on which his carvings stand. The wood may be left in is natural coloration or painted to depict the coloration of the birds he carves. The bird’s bills, legs and feet may be an integral part of the block of wood from which each piece is carved or made from a combination of wood, metal, and wire.
Marlene spent a lifelong career in education as a teacher, counselor, and administrator for students and adults with disabilities. Those experiences shaped her approach to art and taught her to look at life and the world from a variety of perspectives. The low country provides the place to paint, reflecting the vibrancy, fluidity, nature and character of the wildlife and people who thrive along the Carolina coast.
A reception to meet the artists is Thursday, April 19 from 4:30PM to 6PM at the Public Library in Bayboro. Light refreshments will be served. This exhibit may be seen through May 15.
The Library Art Exhibits are sponsored through a partnership of the Pamlico County Arts Council and the Pamlico Public Library. Pamlico County Arts Council is the designated county partner of the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources which works to make North Carolina the Creative State where a robust arts industry produces a creative economy, vibrant communities and children prepared for the 21st Century.
