Meet The Team

Jim Fenton
Judge
For over two decades, Jim has been capturing the untamed beauty of nature through his lens, guided by his background in wildlife and fisheries biology and his mastery of Nikon equipment. His passion for storytelling through photography took flight during his tenure as a Goldenrod Foundation Artist in Residence where he documented the dynamic lives of seasonal residents, nesting species, and long-distance migrants. His keen eye and patience allowed him to capture birds in action—foraging, breeding, raising young, defending their territory, and preparing for incredible migratory journeys—culminating in a stunning exhibit showcasing the avian wonders of Plymouth Long Beach. Jim’s work has earned prestigious accolades in local, regional, and national Photographic Society of America-affiliated competitions, and his breathtaking images have graced publications such as the Massachusetts and National Audubon Societies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and numerous magazines. Now calling North Carolina home, Jim and his wife, Risa, are eager to embark on new adventures, exploring the Inner Banks, East Coastal Carolina, the awe-inspiring Blue Ridge Parkway, and the vibrant Triangle Area. With every frame, Jim continues to unveil the beauty of the world—one shot at a time.

Hiram Lupton
Judge
For years, the spirit of Pamlico County has been captured through a lens focused on more than just photographs — focused on people, community, and moments that matter. Through dedicated work with The Pamlico News, Hiram has preserved the heartbeat of eastern North Carolina one image at a time. From Friday night football games and hometown celebrations to veterans ceremonies, community gatherings, and quiet everyday scenes, his photography tells the story of a county built on resilience, tradition, and pride. Every image becomes more than a picture; it becomes a memory for families, a record for future generations, and a reminder that the strength of a community is found in its people. Through patience, dedication, and a passion for storytelling, his work continues to shine a light on the moments that bring Pamlico County together.

Doug Parrish
Judge
Located in Merritt, North Carolina, Doug Parrish is the founder of Epic Outdoor Sportsman Photography. With a camera in hand and a passion for the wild, Doug travels across the United States, capturing raw, unfiltered moments in nature. From the coastal marshes of the Eastern Shore to the misty Blue Ridge Mountains and rugged peaks of the West, his work highlights the beauty, drama, and quiet resilience of American landscapes and wildlife. Doug’s images tell stories of patience, respect for the land, and the split-second encounters that define the outdoor experience. Epic Outdoor Sportsman Photography is dedicated to bringing the spirit of the wild to those who live for it.

Risa Danan
Main Contact
Creativity has always been part of Risa’s life, but her passion for photography truly emerged after meeting photographer and mentor Jim Fenton in 2018. Under his guidance, she learned to look beyond technique and capture the energy, emotion, and authenticity of a moment. Her style evolved into a photojournalistic approach focused on candid storytelling, natural movement, and genuine human connection. Whether documenting protests, community events, nature, or urban scenes, she is drawn to honest moments as they unfold. She has also served as a photographer for Pamlico Progressives Indivisible, capturing civic engagement and grassroots activism throughout the community. Risa continues to refine her craft through curiosity, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the stories found in everyday life.
